MUSICAL AND ELOCUTIONARY, j The musical and elocutionary compe-! titioas for school children, initiated by ■ad held under the 'auspices of the Fitzroy School Committee and teachers, were brought to a close last night, when the final concert was the Fitzroj* Ball. The chairman of the school com mittcc (Mr. W. (i. Rcid) presided, and, aa on the previous evening, the hail was crowded to the door. The programiuceonsisted of the pianoforte playing, ainfing, recitations and readings, the items being so veil interpreted and capably rendered that it would have b*-cn ntf discredit tu much older and more experienced performers. Taking the competitions a* a whole, it may be said that tkey proved eminently successful, and when it is considered that the youthful participants had no previous preparation in the way of expert coaching, their achievements cannot be classed otherwise than aa highly meritorious and full of promise.
