'JOTf.V BULL'S EMPIRE." KIXIOrACOLOU. "Nature in nature's own colors,"is the motto of tlic exhibition of Kinemacolor films broucht to Xew Plymouth by Mr. W. J. ,S. Shenhnvcl. and showing for the Hrst time at Everybody's, next Tuesiln.v. Oning to technical difficulties the monochrome film r-till holds the photoplay field, but no one now disputes that for depicting (lie beauties of landscape and the. out-of-doors generally,: Daturai color linematography by the UrbanSmith process leaves everything else far behind. It is scarcely necessary to explain thai kinemacolor is in no way related to the hand-tinted films produced by the well known firm of Pathe and other makers. The process depends on photographing the subject alternately Hi rough two light filters of different colors, and showing the resulting similar film through two different filters carried upon a revolving disc in the projecting lantern. The result is a picture in which the colors of nature (ex-. cept. perhaps, in the ease of very fast* moving objects) are reproduced with al« most miraculous fidelity in all their original brilliance. Mr. Shcnhard's pictures cover a very wide range of subjects, mid ffive a good idea of the versatility of the process. Amongst the scenes shown are a Eqyal visit to Ireland, in which the brilliant uniforms of the troops make a brave spectacle: a run with the Exmoor staghounds, the Royal Horse Show at Richmond, the famous Cowes Regatta, find views of Niagara Falls and winter sports in Canada. The finest of all the films, however, are contained in a series taken under the supervision of the New Zealand Government, and showing all the 1 principal beauty-spots of the Dominion. Something in the clear air and forighti sunshine in this country seems to suit color-kinematography.to perfection, and many of the scenes—especially those in Milf ord Sound and on Lake Wakatipu—are in surpassing beauty. The Alms excel in depicting blue skies and beautiful cloud effects, reflections in water, distant hills, and the green of the bu«h, making black and white seem by comparison as tame and unattractive as a landscape seen through smoked glasses. Maori life at Eotorua makes a series of most attractive pictures, the process (showing the color of the average Maori's skin exactly, and reproducing the bright hues of dved flax, feathers, and greenstone eouiillv well. Geysers and other thermal'wonders come largely, mto the scenes, and included in. the series are views of many sports and pastimes. The Kinemacolor season will be limited to two nights with a matinee on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The box plan opens at Collier's this morning, reserved seats, are 9s.
