FITZROY SCHOOL.
MUSICAL AND ELOCUTIONARY COMPETITIONS. The musical and elocutionary competitions in connection with the Fitzroy school were continued yesterday, another series being heard during the'day, and ■those deemed to be tho best bv the judges were selected for the final" tests in the evening, when they constituted |a_ mjost enjoyablo -prorgamme at the Fitzroy Hall, where there was a large attendance of parents and friends, and every item given by the juvenile contestants created considerable interest, the appreciation of the audience finding expression in frequent bursts of "hearty applause.
Tlie chairman of the school committee, Mr. W. G. Keid. presided at the concert, and in opening tho proceedings said he was very pleased to see so many present. The objects of the competitions were to foster a love for literature and music, to encourage children to practice, and to discern what talent was in the district. He felt sure this small beginning would produce widespreading results, and that future competitions would include entrants from all parts of the province. (Applause.) The judges were as follow: Mvsic Messrs P. IW. G. McLcod and (i. H. White; elocution, Messrs A. H. Johnstone, IT. Trimble, and G. H. Dolby. At the close of the programme the chairman stated that it had been intended to announce the results so far as they had gone, but as it would take tlie judges some little time to make up their points it had been decided to hold over tho announcement till tho following evening (to-night), when a splendid con" cert programme .would be presented. The following were tho selected competitors who were heard last night, each being a Fiteroy school pupil, except where otherwise stated:
Piano solo.—Edwina Nops and Tni .Nops.' Five entries. Vocal solo, juniors.—Frank Cleland, Elsie Parmer, and Nellie Harvey. Nine entries.
Vocal duet, seniors—.Bertie Harvey and Eoy Butler, Winnie Knowlcs and Vera Milligan, Evelyn White and Ruth Day, Beatrice Kerr and Flo Arden. Seven entries. Vocal solo in character.—Ruth Day and Hoy Butler. Humorous recitation, juniors.—-Te ■Rata Day, Ned Smith, and B. Moverley. Four entries. Heading.—Class A (under 9 years), Isabel Tolme and J. Olsen; ii cnt.ioa. Class B (over 9 years and under 11). V. Pepperill and Atua Skipper. Class C (over 11), Evelyn White and Edna Wadman; 5 entrie...
Mentation.—-Class A, Frank Cleland and Kirstine Symonsj 5 entries. Class B, Fred Goldswprthy and Archie Huggard. Humorous recitations.—Seniors, Belle 'Mackic and George Grnvcr; 5 entries. Juniors: Te Rata Day, Ned Smith (Central School), and B. Moverley (Central School); 4 entries. The pupils of the Technical College will be judged to-day as a separate class. At to-night's concert the final contests for the Fitzroy school, including a few entries from the Central school, will eventuate, and all the final results will be declared.
