ABOLITION OF TOLLS.

DEPUTATION TO •PROTEST TO MINISTERS. (By Telegraph.—Our Parliamentary Reporter). Wellington, Last Night. Representatives of the Taranaki, Stratford, Elthuin and Hawera County Councils interviewed- the Minister o'f Public Works in order to protest against the Bill introduced by Mr. C. A. Wilkinson to abolish toll gates. Tho speakers were Messrs J. B. Murdoch (Hawera), J. Connett (Taranaki), W. Hathaway (Stratford), who stated that the toll gates in Taranaki at present produced about £(1000 per annum, and if they were abolished the local bodies would have to find this money through rate.-, or go without it altogether, and the position would be very serious, and that the time was not suitable for an important ;change in the method of raising revenue. The Minister said that the matter rested with the House, but he did not think the Bill would pass during the present session, inview of the obvious difficulty of making provision from other sources to cover the loss of revenue at present derived from toll gates.
