Ewen, managing director of 'Messrs Sargood, Son and Ewen, is at' present on a short visit to New Plymouth. Mr. W. .J*- Dixoa- has been. appointed a member of the Ackland School Committee, in place of Mr, Linn, who ia going into camp.
Mr. J. Wooldridge has been appointed chairman of directors of the Okato Dairy Company, in succession to Mr. Newton King, who re,signed at the annual meeting, of the company held oil Monday; Mr. H. Trimble has been fe-appointed representative of the Taramuki Education Board on the New Plymouth 'High School Board, and he was given a vote of thanks for his services during {Be past two years. General Botha's eldest son. Captain I-Kjwts Botha, has. left London. to join Sir Douglas Haig'a staff. Captain Botha, recently airiv'etrfTOm tire Cap® to johr « well-known British regiment, in which he has been offered a captaincy, an offer which iwas at once accepted. His military career has been remarkable. As a youngster of eight years he Went thfougfi the Boer War with his father, and saw a great deal of fighting, Wig; under fife on several occasions. When the Union's 'Defence Act WHS passed, he joined theSouth African Military College, where he showed great promise, and on the outbreak of the war he asked to bo allowed to proceed to the front. He served on Sir Duncan Mackenzie's staff in South-West Africa for some time, and subsequently joined General Botha's staff, and went right through the Southwest campaign. Subsequently Captain Louis—as he is generally known—joined General Smuts' staff, and did same excellent work in the German East Africa campaign. Ever since the outbreak of the war, however, he had been extremely anxious to see active service on the western front, and when the call came he accepted at once,'
