As from May 1 last all deck officers in the Northern Company's service have been granted a war bonus of £2 a month. According to officers of the American steamship Justin, of the Garland line, whidh arrived on the Sound from Shanghai last month, China nipped German attempts to destroy German war-bound vessels in Shanghai so successfully thatChina now has a fine little fleet of German seized vessels ready for 1 sea (says the Commercial News). At Shanghai they also have an Austrian freighter, the China, right under the guns of one of their own cruisers. It is declared by members of the crew of the Jusiin that Chinese authorities did not wait to work out the legal points when they saw a break with German was coming. A crew of Chinese soldiers rushed >ic German vessels, with tihe result that they unearthed the. time bombs arranged in the cylinders of the vessels before any damage was done. The quick work on the part of the Chinese saved these vessels, so they are now ready for use.
