SCOTCH DAY AT THE MART.
The effort of St. Andrew's U&W Guild, on behalf of the patriotic fundr. eventuated on Saturday, it proving win' of the most picturesque displays teih in New Plymouth. The Mart mas, woll stocked with «11 sorts of Scotch delicacies, nicely arranged, the chief feature being the haggis, for which there wan a great demand. Outsidktie Mart tljo Scottish flag was hoisted and the stalls were draped with tartan, the flc-wir stall, in charge of tho Mayoress, beii particularly admired, while< over all tlie first line of the Scotch anthem. "Should Auld Acquaintance' be Forgot,'' left no doubt that the Scots were out for ■ tlie dav. ,'
At 11 o'clock tho triumphant skirl <jf the bagpipes announced the approach <tf "tho great chieftain o' tlia puddin' racef borne aloft by a sturdy Highlander, prl« ceded by two pipers and Drum Majdr Roderick Macrae, and followed by tlja representative* of the different clani, making a stirring spectacle. When the procession reached tbe Mart, the haggis was delivered and promptly disposed of. The procession then marched .to the real* donee of Mrs. Paul, where the pipert played a tribute to the memory of tIM late Mr. Paul.
During the afternoon a fine exhibition of dancing was given on a platform in Brougham Street, the most appreciated item being the dancing of the seauntruibhas by Ohief Mfterae, who far nino years held the championship for this dance. Miss Phyllis McG-lashajj'a dance was gracefully performed, "and evoked hearty, applause from the spectators. A foursome reel by Messrs Macrae and Adams and the Missis Adams was also well executed. Piptft Bary and Mackie were in great fonia, their playing causing rounds of applau«. The audience showed their appreciation by showering coins on the platform, the fine sum of over £33 being collected. Before dispersing Master MafflCMrsaog a very touching song, "Daddy, dont jfo .down the mine," and then Mr. A. fl. Johnstone stepped on the platform and thanked the public for their liberal sup* port of a good cause. The gross takings of jjeoteh Day amount to about £IOO. Smart is also thanked for his suggestion of the Scotch, Day, while a similar courtesy is extended to he and Messrs Thomson and Jarvis for the use of their cars. The Guild is especially grateful to Mrs. E. Smith, of Fitzroy, who made the haggis—no light undertaking; and also to all who so kindly sent donations of money and flood*. Special mention is due to the Sash and Door Company for loon of thober, anil to Mr. F. Coleman for erecting the platform for the dancing.
