PROPOSED PRESENTATION TO DEFENCE MINISTER. SOME STRONG REMARKS. Ckristehurch, Last Night. A public meeting was held to-day to consider the question of making a presentation to Sir James Allen in recognition of the manner in which lie carried out his onerous duties during the absence of Mr. Massev and Sir Joseph Ward. The Mayor (iMr. H. Holland), who presided, said the movement was devoid of party interest, and he proceeded to pay a tribute to Sir J. Allen's services to the State and Empire. He also mentioned that movements were afoot elsewhere to present the Minister with some memento of his work for the Dominion. Mr. A. E. G. Rhodes moved that all present form themselves into a committee to further the proposal. Mr. F. Shacklock condemned the movement. saying it was only courting failure, as the rank and file of Christ-church would have nothing to do with it. Mr. Hiram Hunter said lie thought a vote of condemnation would better represent the feelings of the workers than a testimonial or presentation.
