THE BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL.
THE NEW BUILDING A FURTHER STAGE .REACHED. A further stage in the somewhat prolonged negotiations that have taken place in connection with the provision of now class-room accommodation for the Boys' High Sehol, to replace the building destroyed by Are, was reached at the board's meeting last night, and there now seems every probability that a start will be made with the new buildings shortly. Mr. W. A. Cumming, architect, reported that on the stli instant he had submitted the plan, as approved by the board, to the Director of Education, and stated that it had been decided by the board to eventually erect a building in accordance with the plan first submitted.. No objection was made to that, but suggestions were made as to varying the. size ,of the classrooms from ifift x 20ft to •21!ftx2£ft. (practically the same area, 1 and the provision of two more classrooms and the reduction of the headmaster's rooms. These suggestions had been embodied in the plan forwarded ,to the headmaster to save time. This plan would permit of the original design being carried out (except modified class rooms). The temporary gallery, emergency steps from same, and temporary roof over lower room on ground floor, would not be required eventually, but the cost of same would not be great. He recommended acceptance of the plan, is the Director of Education had promised that if such a plan,' embodying, as it did, his proposals, was submitted for a building costing £BSOO, he would at once seek the Minister's authority fox a grant of £SOOO, The accommodation now provided was for headmaster, waiting hall, nine class rooms (including the two existing class rooms), physics, chemistry, common Voom, and one music room. The chairman stated that the alterations would not affect the ultimate design, as originally proposed by the board. Members considered the communication very satisfactory. On the motion of the chairman, seeonded by Mr. T. G. Hirst, it was resolved to authorise the : architect to prepare the plans and specifications on the lines suggested by him, and to submit the same to the Minister of Education for approval. Members were anxious that there should be no delay, so that tenders can be called as eaxly as possible.
