A PICTURESQUE SCENE.
A LINE OF NEW ZEALANDHRS' TROPHIES, Received July 16, 10.16 p.m. London, July 15. Mr. Philip Gibbs, referring to the Royal visit to the front, describes a picturesque scene in an old town. In the Grando Place 'before the Town Hall was a mass of soldiers formed in a hollow square, consisting mostly of Australians and New Zealanders. The King walked with General Godley, who is commanding the Anzacs, along a line of trophies captured at Messines. There were nine field guns, two anti-tank guns, and many machine-guns and mortars taken by the New Zealanders and Irish about Wytschaet.
THE MESOPOTAMIA TRIBUNAL. T.ondon, July 15. The Observer understands that the Government is introducing a Bill establishing a statutory tribunal in Mesopotamia, consisting of judges, laymen, and military, to consider the findings of the Commission, and to examine the accused persons. > The verdict will be the basis of further Government action.
BRITISH TRADE. London, July lfi. Imports into Britain last month decreased £55®,358, exports £3,622,1)00, and re-exports £"244,(113, compared with last June.
The principal imports which increased were: Grain and flour £8,134,487, meat £939,125, non-dutiable goods £1,346,912, wool £2,853,890. The largest decrease in imports in dutiable goods was drink £1,863,480.
AIR RAIDS DEFENCE. London, July 15. Mr. Lloyd George, replying to a deputation of London members of Parliament, admitted the special need of defending London from air ra,ids, but the safety of the soldiers at the front was the first consideration. If anyone said to the contrary, let them find another Government. He denied that air squadrons had been sent to France against the advice of the military; they had ibeen sent at the pressing request of Sir Douglas Haig, whom all the military advisers supported. The Government accepted the principle of national responsibility for damage by air raids.
