ANXUAL PROVINCIAL CONVENTION
There was a good attendance at the W.C.T.'U. Convention held in the Methodist Church, Eltham, on Wednesday. The proceedings were presided over ( bj r the District President, Mrs. Alan Douglas, Representatives were also present from the Hawera and Now Plymouth Unions.
The proceedings were opened by the reading of a carefully prepared -.paper by Mrs. Maunder, which dealt with the subiect of scientific teaching of temperance in fchools.
Speeches were delivered by Miss Maunder, Hawera, subject: "The Influence of •Reading upon Character." Mrs. Walker, Xormainby (Temperance), Mrs. Parkinson, Mnnaia (Prohibition), Mrs. GHling, Hawera (latter being winner of.the prize), subject: "Putting First Things First?' Bet. A. 0. Harris was judge. The election of officers resulted:—Mrs. Phillips, president of Provincial.Convention: Mrs. Jones, secretary; Mrs; Jamieson (re-elected) treasurer. The Convention accorded their deepest sympathy to all those suffering through the war. The following resolution was carried: '•That the Convention join with the Alliance «uid • demand the referendum to close liquor bars at 0 p.m. till 8 a.m. Mrs. Douglas, who has held the position of President for 21 years, tendered her resignation, which was accepted with regret, many eulogistic remarks being made as to the valuable services which she bad rendered during hei lengthy term of ollicc. —Argus.
