Mr. F. Andrews, Smart. Road, has received word that his son, Private It. Andrews, has been wounded. Mrs. Stephen .Tames, of Korito, has received advice that her eldest son, Jack, who left with the 13th Reinforcements, was killed in action on June 8.
The Ven. Archdeacon P. G. Evans, military chaplain, has been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers' Decoration, he having over twenty years of commissioned service.
Among the recent casualties are those of Roy Fraser, son of Mr. ,D. Fraser, of Uruti. who has been wounded for the second time; also Walter Young, of Uruti, who was "wounded on June 26. Trooper Clutha Mackenzie, editor of the "Chronicles of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force," intends to return to London, where he will resume control of the journal at that end.
Mr. R. T. Batley, a very well-known settler in the northern back country of Taranaki, died at Wellington on Friday afternoon. Mr Batley resided at Moawhango for many years, and had been in a Wellington hospital for the last two months.
Mr. Jack Scott, well known in North Taranaki, and formerly manager for Mr. R. T. Batley at Awakino, has joined the staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., and will represent the company as agent at Inglewood, in connection with the Stratford branch of the Company. Mr. J. W. Whittaker, of Palmerston North, the well-known dairy factory accountant, has been appointed auditor for the Government in connection with the butter-fat levy. He was secretary to the Bunnythorpe Dairy Company for a number of years. Mr. L. A. Nolan, of New Plymouth, who has been in Wellington attending the Racing Conference, received Word that his brother, Private C. P. Nolan, of the Auckland Infantry Regiment, had died of wounds on June 23. Mr. Nolan is now in Auckland with hh mother, and expects to return next week. Mrs. Standish has received a letter from her who is in England, stating that Dr. Carl Riley, son of the late Mr. Chas. Riley, who many years ago was residing at Lepperton, had diorl in France. Dr. Riley, it seems, had been suffering from heart trouble for some time, and had had two. months' rest, and feeling benefited a3 a result, went out for a ride. He had not proceeded far, however, when he was seen to fall from his horse. Comrades immediately went to his ! assistance, but life was extinct.
Another old Auckland colonist, Mr. Sannicl Bardie}', died on Saturday last in liia SI st year. He arrived in New Zealand in the ship Star of Tasmania at Port Chalmers in 1803, when the gold fever was at its height. He was attracted to the Otago fields and took up a claim on the hank of the Molyheaux. On the West Coast gold diggings breaking <iut he and his wife went to that field. He was present at.several rushes. From the West Coast Mr. Hardly and his family removed to Canterbury and resided 'for 25 years at Asfoburton. They afterwards removed to Hamilton, and finally went to Auckland. Mr. Hardley is survived by his widow, five sons and three daughters. The hospital progress report states that Private W. Bensley is not a severe case.
