A NEW LEAGUE.
WELFARE OF DOMINION. THE HL7BURE OP SECOND DIVISION men. A league of business men lias teen formed in Dunedin under the name of flie Dominion Welfare League. Its object is to get Parliament to seriously consider the position of the men lilcelv to be called in the Second Division on the following grounds:— The fixing of a limit to the number of men t.hey propose to send out of the Dominion on account of the depletion of the man-power of the country and itsresult in non-productiveness. The position of New Zealand in comparison •wi th other portions of the Empire which have not adopted conscrit)tion, and its incapacity to compete with those countries at present and after the war. That the pavs and pensions as established bv the Government and the (wale proposed bv the Second Division league being absqlutely inadequate and imiou- | sistent 'with the sacrifice made iby those men who have already gone or may lie called upon to go, the Government be requested to make a new classificationwhich will foe retros.pect.ive. Such classification should be sufficient to enable soldiers and their dependents to he free from the humiliation of having to apply to patriotic charity for assistance. Tile financial position of dependents paying interest nn borrowed money and the position of the mortgagees, many of whom are solely dependent on this interest for their living. The moral position by the removal of the head of the home and its effect u.oon the upbringing and education of the children.
