TARIKI. (From Our Own Correspondent). TVe 'liave had cw full share of casualties during the last meek 'or two, and I am sorry to record the following —•Killed in action: Privates W. C. and T. ]). .Ham-blyn and .T. D. Fraser; died of wounds: 'V. S. K. Karalus (Ron.); wounded: Lance-Corporals K. Eason and A. F. Reid and Privates C. Glen and TV. Coutts. Wo wish the latter a speedy recovery. To the relatives of those who have given their lives in this great struggle we extend our sincere sympathy. Six of .Mr. C. 3. Hamblyn's sons have answered the calk and three of them have made the supreme sacrifice. A very successful concert and dance was held in the Tariki Hall on June 21, the occasion toeing a farewell tendered to Privates C. Ackland and W. Newton, who were on final leave. Tiie night was very hoisterous, and much .praise is due to Messrs. 3. and L. Sutherland and Mr. 'Barlow, who journeyed from Inglewood to assist with the programme, their items meeting with much applause. A very representative meeting of members of the Second Division was held here last week, and delegates were appointed to attend a public meeting of the Second Division members in Stratford last Friday. Another meeting will be held on Thursday evening, and nve will then learn what the main objects arc. I understand some of the iStrattord mem'bers will he present to give us their views. All iSecond Division reservists should avail themselves and roll up and see what is doing. Private Stephenson is in London and reported well. Tariki is now without a butcher, and a real good business awaits an energetic man. The Ladies' Patriotic League held their annual meeting last week, and, according to the .balance sheets a real successful year has been their rejward. The following officers were appointed: President, Mrs. Eason (re-elected); secretary, Mrs. .Temison (re-elected); treasurer, Miss E. Kilsby. The amount handled during the year was £ 105 12s !od, expended for material, etc., £72 17s 9d, leaving a credit ibalanco of .€32 los Id. The League should ecrtainly have more support from the women folk and all the work should not be left to the few who are always there to do their share. It was decided at the meeting to support the YJM.C.A. fund as much as possible. A tea and social evening is to he given by the ladies in aid of the above fund, and if successful the intention is to have them regularly. Will advise date later. Am sure tile public will respond to this worthy object. Privates G. Kettlewell and L. Hollis are expected home on final leave. Out of five reservists from this district who attended medical examination at Stratford last Saturday only one was passed for active service.

' TARATA. (From Our Own Correspondent) A reception home afternoon tea wr. - tendered to (Lieutenant Harold P.laekburne, who has returned from the front to take up another position in a later reinforcement. 'Mr. E. J. Iblc, on behalf of the settlers, extended a hearty welcome to Lieut. Blackiburne, and presented iiim with a decanter set and stand. Lieut. 'Blackiburne suitably replied, thanking all for the nice present and kindness shown. Tie spoke very feelingly of his mates at the front and expressed a desire to be back with them again. Items were given by Mesdames Maclvor. Drummond, Misses Hetty and Myrtle Guildford and Miss Officer "presided it the piano. The ladies supplied the afternoon tea in their usual firstclass manner and a very enjoyable afternoon was spent. Another patriotic effort has been started to .procure comforts, etc., for the Pttkeho and Tarata boys at the front. A strong committee lias been formed with Mr. E. J. Ible as chairman, Mr. 0. Smith treasurer, and P. J, Eggleton lion, secret Try. Thursday, July 2G, is the date selected for the final and gifts and subs, are coming in fast. Our lecal hall committee has decided to instal a new lighting system in the hall, which will be a decided improvement on the old kerosene lamp. The dairy faotory has been closed for the past three weeks, and everything is ready for the coming season, A new concrete dam and race have been recently put in, and the water power has been resorted to at last. Whooping cough and measles have been very prevalent in the Pukeho and Tarata district, and the attenilanc at the two schools has somewhat suffered. Of late several accidents have happened with motor cars on the Tarata Zig-Zag. So far those concerned have been very lucfty, but unlew the Zig-Zag is widened in places and some of the awkward corners taken away there will no doubt some day be a serious accident. Mr. Sergei, agricultural lecturer, is giving a lecture to farmers in the ball on Friday night, the subject being top (trussing for 1917. i OPUNAKE. (From Our Own Correspondent). .A meeting of the Egmont Patriotic League was held in the Town Hall last Friday, Mr. W. 1!. Dudley presiding over a poor attendance. Mr. G. Walker was appointed treasurer in place of Mr. Blyth resigned. The league endorsed the resolution from the Masterton fiocietv requesting the Government to establish a college for returned disabled soiifiers where they can become proficient in some useful calling. Mr. Geo. W. Rogers, on behalf on the Polytechnic Society, desired the league to accept £lo3,'£.to of the amount to be forwarded to the base hospital in France The young ladies iwlio promoted the polytechnic for the. purpose of raising funds for the' base hospitals have 'been more successful than they anticipated. A good deal of discussion ensued on the point raised as to whether the league could accept the money for the base hospital. Finally it was decided to accept the £lOl, and forward £SO as requested. A trotting match for £lO aside between horses belonging to Mr. Sims (Te Kiri) and Mr. -T. Barrett (Pungarebu) took place, the course being from Rahotu to Opunake. Mr. Bsrrett's horse won fairly easily. At the Town 'Board meeting on Monday evening the members present were: Messrs W.'C. Dudley (chairman), C. A. Trotter S.M. Cornish, J.P. Burtton and E. L. Thorpe. A resolution was passed that the Board obtain the services of an engineer to provide an estimate for an electric lighting scheme for Opunake. A letter was also received from Mr. Kendall, health inspector, drawing the Board's attention to the main exit of the Tdwn Hall being blocked by an engine tised in connection with picture
