STRATFORD.

{From Our Own Correspondent.) [All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. U. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will leceive prompt attention.] Stratford, July 5. The Fire Brigade intend holding a Hard-up Social this month. Considering that so many calls have been made on the public during the past few months the Fire Brigade have refrained from making direct appeals to the public; but, unfortunately, the Brigade cannot exist on air. and needs funds to carry on. By holding a social the funds of the brigade should receive a lift along. July has been ushered in with wet weather and heavy gales. The Patea river is running high, and, judging by the racing, muddy waters, the banks further up the mountain must have been covered by the continuous rainfall. So far the county engineer has heard of no slips or blockages. Like many other institutions, the membership of the Egmont Club has suffered severely through the war. According to the hooks no less than 54 old members are at the front or engaged in military duties. The lessened revenue makes it necessary to keep a sharp eye on finance, and to keep things going, some who realise the 'benefits of this institution have voluntarily increased th£ir contributions, or, as one put it, "to keep a comrade at the front in membership." Tho writer recently had a lookover the premises and was agreeably surprised at the excellent provision made for the comfort of patrons and visitors. The work on the nriw Picture building is moving along. The frontage and sides are now going skywards, and plainly indicate that the building will .be the highest in Stratford. T.
