The annual report of the Christchurch Tramway Board shows the revenue for the year to have been £150,000. The operating expenses were £85,740, and there is a surplus, after providing for depreciation, renewals, interest, etc., of £lsOl. The passengers carried numbered 70,094,115. Mr. C. Sneddon, of Waverley, met with :i peculiar and painful accident on Friday. While driving home in his motof car he ran over his dog; he stopped the ' • ■ar, got out, and went back to wheife the dog lay, and picked it up. The animal snapped at him. catching him by t.h" hand, its teeth sinking in deeply and before he could get the dog's mouth open his hand was badly torn.
The accidental omission of the word ' anonymous' in the note at the foot of the letters oil the baby competition, in yesterday's issue, gave' a wrong impression. The committee of the High School Old Girls' Association, while being pleased to give information regarding the most popular voting contest, decline to answer anonymous correspondents. Acting on behalf of Bird and Jensen, billiard-table manufacturers and cabinetmakers, Messrs Wilford, Levi, and Jackson, solicitors, have issued a writ claiming £IOOO damages from the "John Bull" Newspaper Proprietary Ltd., for alleged libel contained in an article appearing in the last issue of "John Bull's Register." This is the second writ in a few weeks issued against the same paper. Referring to the destruction by fire of Sir Walter Buchanan's homestead an exchange says: "Sir- Walter Buchanan is a very heavy loser.- He had a fine Library, historical records, stud cattle records, and personal effects which money could not buy. In less than an hour the collection of a lifetime had gone in flames. Sir Walter, who is 70 years of age, will have the sympathy of the whole community in a loss that to him is irreparable." At the Dominion iShow, Hflwera, this evening, an autographed portrait of Field-Marshal Lord TVench will be auctioned. Tlie funds will be in aid of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force Gift Tcibacco Fund. The auction will take place in the motor hall at S o'clock tonight.
Barny Oldlicld, automobile racer, Jess Willard, heavy-weight champion, and Fran'k Chance, one-time famous baseball champion, witnessed all of the fight scones in the latest William Farnum picture, "Fighting Blood." Each is enthusiastic over Farnuim as a specimen of fine physical manhood. "Fighting Blood" shdivs at 'Everybody's to-night and tomorrow. There was a rumour current in Wellington on Saturday night that a soldier at Trentham had run amok and seriously injured three of his fellowsoldiers with a bayonet. Inquiries were made of the camp authorities, and it was learned that a soldier had temporarily taken leave of his senses. He attackeol three of his comrades, but was secured before any serious d.ruagc was occasioned. The men attacked only received scratches.
