PUNTER HEAVILY FINED. Auckland, June 29. Two 'bookmakers, Alexander Lindsay Mackie and Leonard Andrews, were fined £IOO eacli for betting on licensed premises. Henry MnCormack, charged with being in Fort street for the purpose of betting was dined £25. All pleaded guilty and paid the fines forthwith. The case against Mc.Cormack was the first in Auckland, and it is believed also jn the Dominion, of a punter being fined. CHARGE OF FORGING VOUCHEES. Wellington, June 30. Herbert Eaton Radcliffe, chief clerk of the Mines Department, was charged at the Magistrate's Court with forging vouchers, also with theft of departmental monies. The total amount involved is stated to 'be £2OO. Radcliffe was remanded till Friday. A FARMER FATALLY STABS HIS SON. Palmerston N., June 30. A tragedy occurred at tßaumai, between Ashurst and 'Pohangina, yesterday. A farmer named George Jackson, residing with his wife and family, attacked his 18-year-old son, Thomas, with a knife. The quarrel arose in the house at dinner. It is alleged that Jackson seized a knife and stabbed his son. Realising what lie had done, Jackson saddled his horso and galloped to Ashhurst. Medical' assistance .vas procured, and the young man was brought to Palmerston .Hospital. His condition 'became worse, and died about eight o'clock police communicated with Jackson, who was arrested at the hotel at" Ashhurst and 'brought to Palmerston early this morning. The young man gradually •became worse, an died albout eight o'clock this morning. Accused appeared .before Magistrate Kenrick. Jackson, who was in an agitated condition, was charged with assault, stabbing and killing his son, Thomas Japkoon. Su?J-Inspeiltor McKmnon asked for a remand for a week, which was granted.
