A SHOTS EFFORT.
The Pierrots to ibe heartily congratulated upon the success of their efforts on behalf of the patriotic funds. They set out to raise £IOOO, and it looks as if they have succeeded in passing this ambitious figure by at least £'soo. To raise over £ISOO net in so short a time is a siplendid achievement, and it is a tribute not only to the zeal and organising powers of the Pierrots, tout to the liberality of the town and country people,' who, since the war began, have, as a matter ■of fact, always responded wdll when properly appealed to. The whole movement was splendid.y engineered, and at the head of each department were placed capable men, iwho, in turn, were supported 'by JvUling hands. All iwere as enthusiastic as tliey were energeitic, and they simply could not 'be denied. As a result the local patriotic fund, whicli was pract.cally depleted (the main monies, of course, are with the Taranaki War Relief Association) has now a substantial credit, and the devoted ladies, under the direction of the Mayoress, will bo aihle to continue their good work. Ihe success of Saturday's (proceedings proves that tho town and district can be relied upon to find the money required for patriotic purposes and it is ■worth considering whether, instead of mailing spasmodic efforts on behalf of the various patriotic funds, ib would not be ibetter to ask the Pierrots to make one ibig effort, as on Saturday, and go to the public for what is necessary. They could do so confidently at least every six or eight months, anj. run on the 'admirable lines of Saturday's appeal, the .Pierrots could without any difficulty raise lall the money required. The Saturday apart is an institution no one wishes to See closed while the war is on, Ibut the .pulblic might well be spared tho various Ismail appeals that are continually being made on ibehalf of deserving causes. They could advantageously tie lumped together, and the Pierrots have shown they possess the will and the '.way to do the rest. Everyone in this energetic iband ;is deserving osf praise for what he has done on this occasion, anil the town and district should be gratified at the knowledge that they have men in their midst 'who are prepared, whenever necessary, ito throw aside everything else and work unsparingly in the interests of the patriotic funds and o,f the iboys who are lighting our battles at the front.
