MILITARY PUNISHMENTS. THE CURTAILMENT OF'PAY. Wellington, Last Night. The advisory hoard of New Zealand 'War'Beliel, Societies wrote to the Defence Jflinißitsr pointing out that dependents were made to suffer when a soldier making an allotment was undergoing, .punishment for military offences. Sir James Allen has replied that the Army Act defines the punishment that can bo inflicted for various military offences, and that he is powerless to vary this in any way. The usual punishment for ordinary offences takes she form of short periods of detention or ifield punishment, and the soldier drain's no pay while se"rving such. This is the principal part of the punishment. It is absolutely vital that discipline in the military force must be maintained, and there is a certain e' ass °f mon ' BSS ameualble to discipline.
