NEW PLYMOUTH HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

ANNUAL "si^TING. The annual meeting of the above society was held in the Soldiers' Club rooms last evening. There was a small attendance of members, over which Mr. J. Gibson presided. The principal items in the balance-sheet showed £23 17s Od for members' subscriptions, and donations £4 Ss. The proceeds from the spring sho\v and-chry-santhemum day were respectively £2O and £25 10s, both amounts being handed over to patriotic funds. The year commenced with a credit balance of £29 13s 9d, and there was now a credit balance of £27 IDs Sd. The balance-sheet was adopted. Mr. Gibson said he was in rather an unfortunate position, but there was no report prepared. There had been some talk that the amounts collected for the patriotic funds should not have appeared, but Biirely they were entitled to credit. This y*ar th'ey had simply given up their functions for patriotic work The ! position as revealed was the healthiest that the society had been in for years; in fact, since its inception. This was the 74th year the society had been in existence, but he was afraid they had come to Hie.'parting of the ways. He thought the next business was to discuss whether the society should continue He suggested that an executive committee could hold the society together. To get an expression of opinion he moved that the society close down for the time being. Mr. N. Allen seconded. Mr G. W. Browne opposed the motion. They would be, almost ignoring the efforts of the ladies who had raised the money. They should make the sacrifice of their own' shows for the sake of patriotic effort. Mr. Corney endorsed the remarks of the previous speaker! He thought it. would be a step in the wrong direction. Mr. Dolby agreed. Mr. Browne moved: •'That the efforts of the society be conducted as in the past year during tho continuance of the war." Mr. Corney seconded. The amendment was lost and the motion, after being amended to read "That the society cease holding shows this year." was carried. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr. J. Gibson; committee, Mesdames Dockrill, Ellerm, Morris ami Miss Hempton, Messrs G. W. Browne, Corney, Dolby and Allen (with power to add to their number); secretary and treasurer, Mr. E. Ellerm.
