LABOR PROBLEMS. (From Our Own Correspondent). lEltham, June 19. A meeting of farmers and others ini forested in labor matters was held, at the Town Hall on Saturday, when Mr. G. H. ttuckeridge delivered an address on "Industrial Problems." Mr. Buckeridge's remarks 'were on tho same lines as those in his speech at tiie farmers' conference at Stratford. He emphasised the need of a fetter understanding being brought about by the farmers and other employers with their employees. Capital and Labor should be made more tolerant of each other, and representatives should calmly and courageously tackle the problem. He made a few suggestions as to possible means of arriving at v a solution of the difficulty on broad lines. He believed the time was opportune for Capital and Labor to meet on common grounds and exchange ideas. Mr. D. L. A. Astbury also expressed the opinion that something on the lines suggested by Mr. Buekeridge should -be followed. He then moved the following resolution: "That in the opinion of this meeting it is desirable that a better understanding should takte pla<(e 'between tho fanning community as a whole; that to further the object the following steps be taken: (1) Committee of three be elected to confer with the head executive of the Union organisations, for the purpose of meeting them to discuss the possibility of coming to a complete understanding on questions considered vital to each in particular, and that the committee report to a future meeting as to results."—'Carried. Messrs C. A- Wilkinson, M.P., D. L. A. Astbury, and G. H. Buekeridge were elected a committee. Votes of thanks to Mr. Buekeridge and the chair concluded the meeting. GENERAL. The third of the series of euchre tournaments and dances in • connection with the C. E, M. Society's Club, was held in the Oddfellows' Hall last evening, 17 tables being used for play. The ladies' prize was won by Mrs. Leggett, and the booby fell to Miss Grimstone. Mr. H. G. Carman proved best player in the men's section, and Master Syme was at the foot of the total. An excellent floor was j available, and, guided t>y Mr. J. Kenny, M.C., and music by Miss Madden, Foster Bros., Rcv.'G. W. An Eltham farmer informs me that Canadian cheese has been commandeered, and that the Imperial authorities are paying IOJd per lb, equal to 2s per lb in hjs opinion. It is with regret we have to record the death of Lionel Lewis, from wounds received in tho war. His elder brother, Gwynne, has not long been invalided ' home through wounds-, and this fatality lias caused much sympathy to be expressed to his widowed mother, Mrs. Lewis. v The Mart, after being shut down for a considerable period, will again be in ' use shortly. This will be good news ; to farmers and townspeople generally. Mr. Stnnlley, who has taken over control of the business, informs me that ho will : hold sales on Wednesday and Saturday, having secured the services of a Hawera auctioneer for the purpose.
