The Daily News. TUESDAY, JUNE 19, 1917.

BRINGING THE GREEKS TO HEEL. It will be seen by this morning's cables that the stern measures taken by tlie Anglo-British in Greece are having a salutory effect. It was imperatively necessary to show the treacherously-minded among the people that the Allies are determined to put an end to the tactics developed during Constantino's regime, and to convince them that the time for duplicity has passed, giving way to the action that is intended to protect the true freedom of the Hellenes. The landing of forces for the occupation of Thessaly and other places was an absolute necessity, quite as essential as the clearing of Athens from the presence of the horde >,i uei'-.nn spies, agents and submarine feeders. The utmost firmness must be used in dealing with any attempt by the reservists or pro-German factions to give trouble, and the Allied troops who have landed on Greek soil, especially at. the Piraeus, which is only four miles from Athens, should be able to deal with any and every trouble. With the harbor of the Piraeus in the possession of the Allies, the heavy guns of their warships can command the city, and the possession of the mountains to the north and south of the city will give the Allies a still firmer grip on the situation. At last the way is being cleared for making Greece serve the Allies' purposes, and the people may rest assured tlmt their best interests will be served by assisting, and not impeding, the march of events as directed by friendly hands. When the source of disaffection has been eradicated by the clearing out of the proGerman element, Greece will have nothing to fear, but everything to hope for.
