STORMS IN WELLINGTON.
A MAN KILLED. Wellington, June 17. Heavy rain, accompanied liy lightning and tliunder set in yesterday afternoon and 'between 7.45 and 8,30 p.m. there was a tremendous downpour, "which soon Hooded the streets in the city and caused a, temporary stoppage of the tram services to ■ some suburbs. The worst effects were felt in Aro street, where the .blockage of a culvert caused a great scour and the water overflowed the foothpaths and invaded some of the houses. At Roseneath a man named W. P. Fitzgerald was walking at the side of Bis residence, when a brick retaining wall collapsed, crushing him to death.' Deceased was married with seven children. Several small slips have occurred and the Hntt road is badly scoured in place?. The Government Meteorologist reports the rainfall in the city for 21 houra ending 9 a.m. at over two inches.
