FOOTBALL.
WAIMATE v. HIGH SCHOOL. The very boisterous weather of Saturday morning did not augur well for a fine afternoon, and consequently interfered considerably with the attendance at the football match between Waimate and High School. Owing to the weather having interfered with tlio preparation of the Reereation Ground, the match was played on the racecourse -before a moderate attendance, Though a stiff wind was blowing, the rain held off throughout the match, which proved very interesting, and considering that it was so early in the season, a good exhibition was given, particularly by the forwards, whilst the few bouts of passing indulged in at times by both sets of backs gave spectators a taste of the football that would have been witnessed had the weather conditions been favorable, and those who can journey to Hawera when the same teams will meet again in three Peeks' time are confidently expecting to see a good match. The teams were as follow: Waimate: O'Dowd, Roberts, McCarthy, Hickey, Lynsky, Hughes, Klenner, Hughes, Wright, Adamson, Bayly, Borrie, Winters, Clague, and McLeod, High School: Scown, Yates, Terry, Drake, Bayly, Callander, Brokenshirc, .VlcHardy, Goss, Fox, Bryce, McKay, Tansey, Rigg, Sarten. The game ended in a draw, which on the day's play was a satisfactory finale. High School in the first spell, playing with the advantage of a strong wind, did most of the attacking, their forwards pressing hard and their backs essaying passing bouts, the majority of which, however, lacked sting. Numorous free kicks were also given against them for infringements. Waimato defended well, the collaring, particularly of Lynsky, being good, and occasionally they essayed an attack. Though High School forced Waimate several times, it was not until near the conclusion of tho spell that Terry got over near the corper, after a fine passing bout in which Callander and Bayly participated, with him. McKay failed to convert. On changing ends it was confidently expected that Waimato would have tho advantage. They attacked from the jump and kept 'High School busily defending. Soon, from a free kick, Bayly eveneu up the scores. This roused up the local boys, and, playing with great dash, they set up an attack. Waimate, hWever, again pressed, and 'Hickey niade one or two dashes, but the collaring of the local lads, as well'as over-eagerness on the part of tho visitors, which resulted in infringements, kept them from scoring. 'High School repelled a hot attack and roused their supporters' hopes by a counter-attack, in which Saxton and Terry carried play to the visitors' twenty-five. Back came the Waimate forwards, and play was in the locals' territory at call of time. Mr. P. Page, a? referee, gave every satisfaeFiou.
