There passed away suddenly a wellknown figure in the Manawatu district in the person of Mr. 'Francis Brogden, at the advanced age of 70 years. He was born in Xclson, where his father was a brewer in the early days. Later on Mr. Brogden jsettled in the Porirua district, ttnd eventually ho came to Palmcrston North, taking up a farm on the Rangitikei line, which he farmed until about Hi years ago, when he came into Palinertton and retired. The deceased gentleman had many thrilling experiences in the early days among the Maoris, and iva? well-known and greatly respected in the Manawatu and Palmcrston districts. The well-deserved honor conferred on Dr. Trnby King, C.M.G., represents (says the Dunedin iStar) a distinct departure from the general rule. It is a very welcome departure, for it means an acknowledgement and a recognition (somewhat belated) of the vital importance of infant culture. Dr. King has been the pioneer in this largo and practically unexplored field of national work, and his service has been marked throughout by originality, thoroughness, and enthusiastic faith. The results of his splendid work are known and admired abroad, and there is a promise of a wide extension of the movement he inaugurated in the teeth of opposition. It is still a matter for regret, however, that the authorities do not yet appreciate the advisableness of setting Dr. King free from his services at Seacliff Mental Hospital in order to take over full supervision of all the activities for the welfare of the child from birth to its entrance into the public schools. It is a. great work, and Dr. King is the man for it. i'or Jnfluenna take Wood's Great Peppermint Cure. Xe-vcr fails, 1/6, 2/fl.
