MILITARY EXEMPTION APPEALS.
HAWERA SITTERS. The Third Wellington Military Service Appeal Board commenced a Eftting at Hawera on Tuesday. . DAIRY, FARMERS' APPEAL. Patrick Joseph Travers, dairy farmer, Waitotara, who appealed on the ground of public interest, said he was milking 30 cows on a leasehold farm, which he had held since December, 1914. The rent was at the rate of 33s per acre. He had no assistance, and it was difficult to get labor. Captain Baldwin suggested that the appellant could sell his herd and sublease his farm. The appeal was dismissed. '. WIDOWED MOTHER TO SOTPOHT. Albert John Hodge, dairy farmcV, Alton, appealed on the ground of public interest. Mr. Spratt said the appellant was 24 years of age and a dairy farmer. He lived with his widowed mother upon a leasehold farm of 28J acres. Appellant was the only assistant on the farm, and his mother was entirely dependent upon him. Mrs. Hodge was in poor health and was unable to do heavy work, and counsel put in a medical certificate to this effect. 'Appellant had two married brothers in the second division, but they were not in a position to take over the management of the farm. The appeal was dismissed. LABORER'S APPEAL. Otto Reichart, laborer, Waitotara, who did not appear, appealed on the ground of public interest and undue hardship. After consultation the Board decided to allow the case to stand over, and in the meanwhile Mr. O'Dea to get into communication with the appellant to come before the Board. . AN APPEAL ALLOWED. - The appeal of James Adamson, for whom Mr. O'Dea appeared, was allowed, appellant being under age, A SHEEP PARMER'S APPEAL. The appeal of William Harre, nheep farmer, Whangamomona, which was before the First Military Service Board in February last, was reconsidered. Captain Baldwin: I understand (rom Captain Walker's notes that your case was adjourned until May to enable you to get a manager. Have you made any attempt to get a manager?— Yes, but not outside of my own district. Captain Baldwin said that upon the evidence previously given by the appellant the farm was in a good position to afford a manager. The appellant admitted that this was so. Ho did not think a manager could work the farm satisfactorily, and he did not think that he (appellant) should have to sacrifice everything. Captain Baldwin: Who has been keeping this farm for you during the last three years? Why, the men who haw botn fighting for you, Mr. Considine said there were too many stories about appellants having to shut up their farms. Was it likely that the farms would be shut up? I Mr. Mack: /Do you' realise that, all single men will have to go before, the; married men are sent?— No. ■., ~ ; ' You are quite prepared to let the married men go before the single men? —Yes. Captain Baldwin: You are prepared, then, to let the married men go and fight for you?— Yes. ~ The appellant proceeded to criticise the Government and to speak o* the conscription of wealth, when the chairman remarked that the Board was not present to discuss political mattera. The appeal was dismissed, appellant being granted leave until July H. APPEALS WITHDRAWN.
