WINTER SHOW.
-RECORD ENTRY OF POULTRY PEOPLE'S DAY. A GOOD ATTENDANCE.
Despite the fact that there are no special trains and no excursion fares this year, there was a good attendance at the show yesterday afternoon and evening, including a large percentage of country people, who had journeyed by motor car from the surrounding districts. Visitors found much to.interest them, and the general arrangements of the show, for which Mr. G. W. Browne Was to a great extent responsible, came In for general praise. In the evening the Citizens' Band were' present, under the baton of Mr. F. W. G. McLood, their music again, being appreciated by the crowd. At the conclusion the band rsvere entertained to supper by the president of the Society (Mr. J. S. Connett). The poultry hall 'was a popular resort yesterday. Hfrc was a record benching for New Plymouth, both from the point of view of number and quality, and the judge (Mr. S. Johnston, Pahnerston North) had a very busy timo. All Taranaki fanciers were represented. In addition, birds were present from Palmerston North and Hawke's Rax- The Orpington championships had been allotted to New Plymouth, and the championship went to a Hawke's Bay bird. Local fanciers scored well in the prize list. Mr. S. J. Smith's five guinea cup for the best bird in the show was won by Mr. J. Urlich (Hawera) with a white Plymouth Rock cock, and Mr. J* McNeill's special fqj the best bird of opposite sex was won by Mr. Edward James, of New Plymouth, with a white Leg- ■ horn (American) pullet. The judge, in the course of conversation with a representative of the News, said that he considered this the best poultry show held in New Plymouth, where the show has shown steady progress during the past few years. Inhere were some good bird., penned in" the black Orpingtons, but the entry was not so large aa one would expect, considering they '\vero competing for championship honors. The type of birds was good, though, there was still a tendency on the part of some breeders to produce too much loose feather. The winning hen, though perhaps not quite as good in carriage, was something to aim at as. regards lightness of feather. The championship bird, owned bv Mr. Hicks, of Otant. was'a. beautiful type, being very ne'ab in the head and showing perfect conditio.!. "Whites and buffs did not" bring iini3h competition. American white Leghorns are a very popular class in Taranaki, and lie considered the bsnehing here and at Hawera the best in the Dominion; in fact, the class of cockerels was the finest lot of birds he had seen, and some birds that 'Were not placed would have gained a championship here three years ago. E. James, New Plymouth, he considered put up a performance hard to excel in scoring first in'hens, and first, second, and third in cockerels and (pullets, as well as gaining special prizes, and he deserved commendation tor breeding such a team, all stamped" with the hall mark. Wyandottes, both gold and silver, were a good class. Competition in white 'Socks was very keen, and the winner of the special prize for the best bird in the show was one of the highest 'quality, his type, position of legs, fineness of bone, and fomb leaving little to be desired. The winning ban and pullet were also exceptionally: good. Competition in the utility classes was also very keen, and he considered breeders of light, varieties will have to look to their laurels if they wi3h to keep up with the breeders of the heavy, varieties. Bantaius had not improved much in quality, though one or*two game stood out. He did not se.3 much improvement In the ducks, but the geese were better than usual, one or two fine specimens being shown. Pigeons were not as strong as usual. There were some fine birds, but verylittle competition. H. J. Moverley, save 'in two classes, scored in working homers and distance birds. In canaries, G. Brooks and G. Goodacro were the (principal winnerc. The prize-winners were as follow: ORPINGTONS. Blac-k, single comb, cock: W. T. Hicks (Otane, Hawke's Bav) 1, H. Ward 2, A Jones 3. Hen: Walter Scott 1, W. T.
