CONSCRIPTION FOR MAORIS.

OWING TO POOR RECRUITING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A statement was made by Sir James Allen to-day that the Government had decided to extend the Military Service Act to the Maoris, being empowered to do so by Section 50 of the Act, if voluntary recruiting was not producing the men required to provide the reinforcements for the pioneer battalion. While the Mnoris in most districts have responded splendidly, the tribes in one district have sent practically no men to Hie front. A proclamation will be issued in a fortnight. This does not affect the South Island, where very' few eligibleMaoris remain.
