The Board referred all the schemes to its own engineer to report. BURIAL OF UNDISCHARGED SOLDIERS. QUESTION OF FREE PLOTS. Wellington, June 12. The question of funeral and burial expenses of members of the Expeditionary Force who die prior to discharge from the force was recently under consideration bv the Government, and the Minister of Internal Affairs, being the Minister in charge' of cemeteries, is sending a circular to the various local bodies and cemetery trustees with a view to ascertaining whether the authorities in charge of cemeteries proposed, from a patriotic point of view, to supply burial plots for soldiers free of cost, also whether they will later permit the erection by the Government of suitable headstones or memorials. OONCRATTXATTOXS TO MESSINES HEROES. APPRECIATION OF TUNNELLERS' WORK. Wellington. June 12. Tim Minister of Defence has dispatched to-day the following telegram to General 3odley: "I have read 1 with pride the account of the taking of Messines bv the Yew Zealanders. We deeply regret the loss and are full of sympathy with the sick and wounded, and earnestly hope the casualties are not heavv. Let. General Russell and all his command know that New Zealand is grateful at the onnortunitv given to her sons, and' is nroud of their success, and ask him to tell the tunnellers that I realise how their 'work has materially assisted in bringing about tile splendid success." BADGES FOR DISCHARGED SOLDIERS. Wellington, June 15. A notice in General Orders sates that any member of a New Zealand Expeditionary Force who has been discharged in England since August 4. 1914, and is.ineligible for further military service on-account of wounas. sickness, or age, may be. granted the silver war badge for discharged soldiers, provided bis claims arc approved by the Commandant of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in tlio United Kingdom. The badges will lie issued !>.v the officer in charge of tee records at the headquarters of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces in London. . TEMPORARY INSTRUCTORS. TRAINING MEN FOR MEDICAL CORPS Wellington, June 12. ; The conditions of employment of temporary instructors attached to the New Zealand permanent staff have >be<m promulgated in general orders. Members of the First Division who are medically fit for service abroad arc ineligible. For appointment, military experience is an essential qualification, and reasonable preference will be given to returned soldiers, providing they are of good character or not returned for inefficiency or misconduct. All first appointments will be to the rank of staff-sergeant, and tho men will be placed at one of the training camps for a month on probation •before their appointments are confirmed. The new scheme in connection with ■training men for the New Zealand Medical Corps will come into operation tomorrow*, when forty orderlies from A'wapuni will go into camp on the Tauherenikau racecourse for instruction, in military hospital and nursing work. The patients who will occupy the hospital will be from the Tauherenikau segregation camps, for whom it will be entirely reserved. The idea is for medical cr- • derlies. who have had a month's training in the Awapuni squad and stretcher drill to proceed to Tauherenikau, whore they will receive practical training in hospital work under efficient instructors.
