AT THE WINTER SHOW.
J'IXE DISPLAY OF BUTTER AND
CHEESE.
Trio prominent part that butter and cheese has taken and is still taking in the development of Taranaki and indeed 1 of the North Island generally is strikingly illustrated by the fine display of our staple products at the Winter Show, which is now being held in the Coronation Hall. Dairy produce has rightly been given a conspicuous place in the hall nnd the exhibit has b,een very attractively benched, the display relieved » by the 'handsome trophies competed for •being greatly admired. Last year there was a record benching, u.;id it says much for the interest taken in the Society by dairymen that despite labor troubles the benching this year equals it. Practically all the butter factories are again competing. Among the cheese factories Ham-era, Hiverdale and Parkvale are noted absentees but. there are several new competitors, including Waitoa and Waikato, in wliifeh district cheese-mak-ing has made rapid strides of late. In butter outside factories again figure .prcu minentlv in the prize list, but in cheese North Taranaki more than holds its own. The judging was done by Messrs. Robertson and Grant (butter) and Thompson and Wood (cheese), the Government graders from New Plymouth and Patea. The judges expressed themselves as well pleased with the quality of the butter, the points speaking for themselves, remarked one of the judges, and reference to the points will show this, the winners in two classes gradhg 90 and in two others 951, the highest points last year being 93. The judges considered that though the entries this year are as numerous as those of last year, still it is to be regretted that the Society is not better supported by cheese factory managers when the valuable prizes offered are considered. Generally speaking the quality of the cheese is very fair, the winning exhibits being especially so, and the judges experienced considerable difficulty in making tV. award. The f.avor on the whole is uniform grade, but several of the exhibits lost points through faulty manufacture, harsh : body being the fault in some, while others are rather weak. The general appearance of the cheese was very good, nearly all being clean aid free from mould and on this count a word o" thanks is due Mr. H. J. Ivoller, Bell Block iyanager, who had charge of tho cheese. , Th'o principal winner in the butter section this year was again Awahuri. which has been very successful in the New Plymouth show during the past two seasons. This year ib wins three c'as333 Including Messrs Lovell and Christmas' 7n-guinea cup, .T. Nathan nnd Co.'s 50fruinea cup, wjjich it wins three times in succession and therefore wins outright and also tho New Zealand dairy factory manager's trophy, as well as two points prizes. It also scores a second. . Moa Dairy Co. is also very successful, winning "the Society's 25-guinea cup and the trophy for home separated butter. Cape Egmont wins in the novice class. Masterton (2), Tikorangi, Levin and Moa also score seconds. Shannon, Ivairanga, Rata and Tc Aroha are not so prominent in the prize list this year. In chec-e Cardiff secures two firsts including Shaw, Savill and Co.'s cup and the novice competition, also a second. Cape Egmont is very prominent with a first, viz., the Union S.S. Co.'s trophy and two seconds. Dalefield has two firsts and Oxford a first. Parkvale, a prominent winner last year, is not competing, while KaEaramea 'has not been bo prominent in the prize list. •Detailed prize list: — BUTTER. OOP COMPETITION. CLASS I.—Messrs.
