- (From Our Own Correspondent.)' [All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. B. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will teceiro prompt attention.] BOROUGH COUNCIL. June 11. The monthly meeiing of the Council was held this evening. Included in the business were notices of motion by the Mayor:—"That the following rates be struck: General rate of 3-Jd in the £ on unimproved value; special rate of V a d in £ on unimproved value; water rate of M in £ on annual value; sanitation fee of £1 per annum." Cr Coleman to move:—"That the electrical department committee take into consideration the matter of framing regulations for the management of the Department in the direction of defining the powers and duties of tho electrical engineer and the members of his staff: and also of the Town Clerk so far as the lattor's connection with the electrical department is concerned; and that the committee report fully to the Council as soon as possible; and that it be a direction tb the committee to define the said duties of the said persons with the greatest possible degree of detail" BOROUGH ENGINEER'S REPORT. Mr. T. D. Sullivan, iborough engineer, reported that repairs had been effected in Miranda and Lear streets. Footpaths on east side of Juliet street had been rcgraded, and formation oE remainder well in hand. Culverts had been inserted at junction of Miranda street and Pembroke road, water tables attended to, etc. Kerbing and channelling in Juiict street had been completed. Some of the concrete work, 3 1 /. chains, was not satisfactory, and had to be thrown out and rebuilt, but though tho new lot had been down seven days it is not setting satisfactorily. LIGHTING COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The electric light committee reported that eight applications for the position of assistant for the electrical department had been received, and recommended that either Miss Greenhalgh or Miss Kelleher he appointed; that the .wages and conditions of various workmen be improved; that glass panels bgjtfaced in show-room doors; that the company's old premises foe used as a bulk store; that the engineer make the necessary experiments re Broadway lights; that the enginoer be, given full control over outside electrical staff, with power to employ or discharge; that a, further discount of 10 per cent, be allowed on lighting accounts of over £lO. Crockeryware is becoming more and more expensive as the shipments become moTe scares. That being so, those ladies on the look-out for the very best Doulton china and other ware should note that the best variety, combined with moderate prices, will be found at C. E. James' warehouse.
