■A Ohristchurch press message states that the Homebrook Estate at Southbridge, consisting of between 101X1 and 2000 acres, has been purchased by the Government for returned soldiers.
Caprice is always the companion of youth and innocence, and this is well exemplified in "Indiscretion," the Greater Vitagraph drama, starring Lillian Walker, which concludes a successful esason at the Empire to-night. Cable advice has been received from the matron of Aotea Convalescent Home, Egypt, advising that the authorities have authorised the extension of the house to Port Said to accommodate sixty patients.—Press Association. The Education Board 'has received notification that the Department is prepared to consider the establishment of a side school at Westown, provided the department does not have to pay the rent of the building. ■Xormanby Town Board has the steam roller at work on the main road through the town, and the results already are earning for the Board the compliments of travellers. By the way, if Stratford Borough does not bestir itself it will soon have the bad distinction of owning the worst piece of road between Hawera and New Plymouth.—'Star.
Vivian Martin has a quaint and vivid beauty, which has made her a film star in one of the shortest working careers on record. Her hair is one of her great charms, as it is the real cluster of curls that poets rave about and very seldom really find. As the young heroine, Nell •Perviss, of "The Stronger Love" (commencing at Everybody's Theatre to-day; she is mo.st charming, and from the first i scene looks her part of the mountain maid to life.
A journey that is considered very arduous and trying even for a mere man has just been successfully accomplished by a local lady, Miss Wilkinson, of Westown, having driven her Ford through the Tangaraku Gorge to Whangamomona and thence to New Plymouth. Miss Wilkinson left New 'i'lyniout some months ago; when the roads were comparatively good, but left it rather later than was anticipated in making the return journey. However, the party started for home with the only driver on board at the wheel. The journey through twenty miles of mud was made- without a hitch of any kind, the loaded car arriving at its destination safely, both the car and its occupants being, it is needless to state, covered with mud. Miss Wilkinson is to be congratulated on successfully negotiating these roads at this time of the year.
The service at Whiteley Church on Sunday evening will be conducted by •Hie JKev. W. A. Sinclair. The preacher will be the Rev. J. llawson, of the New Zealand Alliance, who is visiting New Plymouth. Non-church goers are specially invited.
A class of instruction in orchard work will be held to-day at Mrs. Morrison's, Morley Street, at '2 p.m. Mr. Browne will instruct. Tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency draw attention to the sale at their Stratford yards on Tuesday next (Juno 12) at 1 p.m., particulars of which will 'be found on page 8 of this issue.

Other star film 3 to come shortly feature Clark Kimball young in "The Dark Silence," "The Rise of Susan," "The Foolish Virgin,'' and "The Prico She Paid"; Mary Euller in "Thrown to the Lions"; Mary Pickford in "The Foundling"; Alice Brady in a World special, ■'The Dancer's Peril''; Anita Stewart in a picturisation of Chambers' remarkable novel, "The Girl Philippa"; and numerous other super featuro films, including the astounding I). IT. Griflith spectacle, "Intolerance," which the management, with characteristic enterprise, lias arranged with i. C. Williamson, Ltd., to screen in New Plymouth.
