MILITARY SERVICE BOARD.
public trust men. Wellington, Last Night. At the First Wellington Military Service Board Bitting, Mr.- A. D. Thomson, assistant Public Service Commissioner, ■attended to give evidence respecting the application which had been before the Board .on several occasions for tlie temporary exemption of half a dozen officers of the Public Trust Office. Asked what assistance the Commissioners had given tlio Public Trustee in the matter of reITeviug fit men for the war by securing temporary men, Mr. Thomson said the Commissioners had done all they could to help the Public Trust Office, and had offered £4 or £5 a .week to temporary men. They had even given £6 as a commencing salary in one case, but the highest wages for a purely clerical man was £5. The pay of temporary men they were getting was higher than that of permanent men, and that fact was causing dissatisfaction in the service. Offic-. ers of the Public Trust needed a special training and knowledge, and junior officers could do work better than outsiders. The employment of temporary hands could be terminated at a day's notice, but such termination was unlikely if a man behaved well and was com■petent." The decision of the Board was reserved.
