ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent). Eltham, June 6. . The annual meeting of the Egmont licensing Committee was held at noon to-day, the S.M., Mr. W. E. Haselden, presiding, other members present being: Messrs E. Parrott, L. Hill, A. H. Christie and W. Douglas. The sittings was a short one, the whole business being over in 45 minutes, during which applications for renewals, transfers, eic, and [wholesale licenses were granted. The Church of England Men's Society is still gaining members, the total now being 170. The secretary, Mr. Harvey, informs me that the club is now completing arrangements for snooker tournaments, cards and billiards.

The health inspector, Mr. Tray, informs me that diphtheria is very prevalent in South Taranaki, particularly around Hawera.

To-day I noticod Eltham and Rawhitiroa school committeemen in deep discussion. They were endeavoring to enlighten each other on the merits of the School Committees' Association. Probably dolepates from these schools will be present lit the annual conference at New Plymouth next weslc. The farmers were much in evidence in town to-day, the weekly sale being the draw. Chatting to a Mata dairyman, he informed me that any young stock showing any condition can he depended /on to bring good money.
