BEAUTIFYING NEW PLYMOUTH
WORKING BEE AT NGAMOTU, Yesterday visitors to the Xgamotu foreshore, where the energetic committee lifts effected great improvements in the last few years and which is rapidly becoming one of the most popular bfaches in the North Island, witnessed a busy scene, and saw actually how the committee, with the small funds, at its command, manages to effect such improvements, for the day was devoted to a working bee which the committee had organised. Some fifty well-wishers of the society, including the members of the committee and numerous loading professional and business men of the town, assembled with their .picks and shovels (the majority being borrowed for the day), and spent the holiday hard at work in improving the surroundings of the foreshore, and a great day's work was done despite the 'fact that most of the workers were noviecs.
The work was part of a comprehensive scheme which the committee has adopted, on the advice of Mv. W. W. Smith and others, with the view to permanently beautifying the site and providing necessary shelter. Yesterday's operations comprised the formation of a roadway from Pioneer Road towards Kawaroa Park, the plans having been prepared by the borough engineer (Mr. Cook),'and the work being controlled throughout the day by Mr. J. Lynch, one of the borough foremen. The work was carried out systematically, some of the men being detailed to fill the ten drays, which were placed .at the committee's disposal by Messrs Russell (three horse team), Parker, Berridge, Marr, Honeyfield, and Clemow, whilst others were appointed to level off and also to drive the drays. This roadway, which is ISft. wide, has been formed 23ft. away from the front qf the cottages. The .society is levelling the ground in front of its ecttages, and private owners will do likewise. It is intended to plant hedges on each side of the road, which will give privacy to the cottages and also allow of further beatification. Between the road and high water mark a square is to be fenced off and planted. A good deal of levelling up has been effected as the result of yesterday's work, and a further bee is to be held on Thursday. Among those who were actively atwot'k yesterday were, Messrs J. Hoyden, R. 0. Ellis, Geo. Grey, J. Morey, R. MeQuadc, M. Holah, W. Bendall, M. Johnson. ll.' Uurle, L. Jennins, Jv Sanders, 0. Howartl), AV. Paul, AA r . Russell, C.S. Curtis, L. R. Webster, G.
