JACKA, V.C., AND MURRAY, V.C. BIRDWOOD'S CONGRATULATIONS. London, May 22. Captain Murray, V.C, D.5.0., has been awarded the bar to the D.S.O. Captain ■Tacka, V.C, has been awarded the bar to the Military Cross. Ca<pta.in\Jacka is on furlough in London. In a letter General Birdwood received hj him the following passage occurs: "No words can express tho value of such work as youw and Murray's. It's an inspiration to all ranks. Congratulations, and I Trope that you continue to win further honors." | Captain Murray, D.5.0., of the Australian Infantry, led his company to tho assault with great skill and courage, and. the position was quickly captured. Three heavy counter-attacks were beaten back owing to his wonderful work. Throughout tho night his company had heavy casualties from concentrated shellfire, and on one occasion gave ground. He rallied his command and saved the. situation by sheer valor, encouraging his men, 'heading bomb parties, leading bayonet charges, and carrying wounded to safety. Hi 3 magnificent example inspired his men throughout. For this he got the Victoria Cross. Captain Jacka was the first Australian V.C. of the war. He obtained the decoration when a corporal for a gallant light in a trench in Gallipoli. He gained the bar to the V.C. for gallantry in France, where he was severely wounded.
