TARANAKI LICENSING COMMITTEE.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Taranaki Licensing Committee was held Yesterday. Present: Messrs. A. Crooke, S.M. (chairman), J. B. Connett, W. L. Newman, F. P. Corkill, W. Ambury and D. H. MacDonald. RENEWALS. _ The following renewals of existing licenses wore granted, the police reports being favorable:— 11. A. ;S. Brookman (Mr. J. H. Quilliam) White Hart Hotel, New Plymouth. Charles Potts, Imperial Hotel (Mr. Johnstone), Now Plymouth. William George Emeny (Mr. H. R. Billing), Royal Hotel, New Plymouth. Edward Whittle (Mr. J. EL. Quilliam) Red House, New Plymouth. Spencer Ridgeley . (Mr. A. H. Jolinstonof, Terminus Hotel, New (Plymouth. It was stated that several small matters to which the police had drawn attention hail been attended to, and that the owner intended spending £2OOO on the building within eighteen months. \ Thomas lvnowles (Mr. H/R. Billing), Moturoa Hotel, New Plymouth. Andrew Laing (Mr. Johnstone), Ingleivood Hotel, Inglewood. In this connection Sub-Inspector Mcllveney said that the fire escapes in tho hotel were not nt all satisfactory, and suggested that a condition of tho renewal should he that they be attended to. Mr. Johnstone said he was authorised by the owner to state that whatever Ivas required ' would be done, and the application was granted on condition that permanent fire escapes he provided forthwith, file police to report at next meeting of the committee. James Hawkins (Mr. Johnstone), Bailway Hotel, Inglewood. E. A. Meredith (Mr. A. H. Johnstone), Oakura Hotel, Oakura. Alexander Sansom (Mr. J. H. Quilliam), Okato Hotel, Okato. NEW LICENSE. Edward McGinty, for,whom Mr. A. H. Johnstone (on behalf of Mr. G. Gray) appeared, applied for a new license for. the Grosvenor Hotel, New Plymouth.— Granted. CRITERION HOTEL. John McKeown, for whom Mr. H. R. Rilling appeared, applied for a renewal of his license of the Criterion Hotel, New Plymouth. The police report stated that eight bedrooms on the too floor of the hotel were not provided with fire-escapes. SubInspector Mcllveney added that from an inspection of the premises he recognised that iti would he' impossible to provide j tlieso rooms with direct escapes owing to tho position they occupied. He suggested that, as was done in larger centres, tho licensee should be asked to 1 undertake that the doors were not locked or otherwise fastened so that in ease of Are there would he easy and unhindered access to the passage from which . a lire escape was available. 1 Mr. Billing said the owner would be - quite prepared to carry out the sugges- ' tions of the police. _ S After consideration the chairman announced that the bench had agreed to grant the renewal subject (1) that the , doors of the bedrooms in question be kept without locks; (2) that the rooms be used only when 110 other rooms ave - available; an£ (3k that the licensee exercise discretion as to whom he puts into these rooms TRANSFER.'' i The transfer of the license of the ' Railway Hotel, Inglewood, from E. Mc- . Ginty to J. Hawkins was granted on the application of Mr. A. 11. Johnstone. LIGHTS. It was decided by the bench that the holders of all publicans' licenses in town bo allowed to extinguish their outside lights at 10 p.m., and that the former practice with regard to country accommodation house lights he continued. PACKET LICENSE. The Northern Steamship Company (Mr. J. H. Quilliam) applied for a packet license.—Granted. WHOLES ALE LICENSE. On the application of Mr. J. IT. Quilliam. a wholesale license was granted to Goldwuter Bros., New Plymouth.
