BUTTER AND CHEESE.

18 la .3. r e I- THE GREAT ACCUMULATIONS. The magnitude of tic dairying industry to New Zealand can be better realised when it is stated thai it is worth .€8,500,0(10 a year to the country, and Is thus the value of the export trade in a butter and cheese approximates £7,000,y 000. New Zealand domestic consumption r is worth £-1,300,000. Ten years ago the 3, export value was under £2,000,000. But S for the want of shipping space this trade y would have shown an enormous rise in r value. As it is. however, the position n that has arisen is causing much anxiety u to producers. There were in store in n New Zealand at the end of April over k 100,030 crates of cheese (in round fig:l ures). This lias been reduced to date, t and on May 21 the quantities held were - 122,073 crates. The following are the r Inklings at various ports:— J Crates. e Auckland M 23,237 i New Plymouth .....-.>» 10,367 i ■ Wanganui .•.,.;.-...-.',-..» 272 r ' - Paten ; ...'.-.vows' 27, finS fc Wellington ....v....... 30,671! ' Lyttelton .....-.->--.-..,.;,:., 3.213 2 ■ liuiiedin ..'.......- 1.330 Bluff ............v.....v 11200 ' ; The butter held in store was 2311,000 boxes at the end of April and 243,229 . boxes on May ft. Of this quantity Auckland held" 170,000 boxes. The New .' Zealand consumption is 30,000 boxes of butter per month. So that it would | take New Zealand a long time to con- ' sumo all the butter now in store, and .still coming in. Fortunately for tho dairy farmer, milk supplies are now ' dwindling, as is customary at this time ' of the year, but the outlook for getting the produce away, notwithstanding the impression made on the cheese above referred to, is still dubious.
