WESTERN ATTACK.
SUCCESSFUL BRITISH RAID. FRENCH REPULSE ENEMY. ATTACKS GERMAN SECOND LINE PENETRATED. AIR SQUADRON ACTIVE. Received May 29, 8.30 p.m. London, May 28. , Field-Marshal Mr Douglas Haig reports: Wo successfully raided east of Vertcllcs. The enemy raided a small post north-east of Ypres. - Many air-' fights occurred on Sunday, twenty-three enemy machines being brought down. Three of ours are missing. A French communique states: Three more enemy attacks at Casque, Teton, aivd Champagne were completely repulsed. The German artillery lias been fairly lively at Mort Homme. On the left bank of the Mense a French detachment penctvated the enemy second line in the region of Uffholtz, Alsace. Our aerial squadron inflicted much military damage,, especially on establishments in ! the Champagne region and at Thurv'ijle. We brought down sixteen enemy machines. ':..'.... i, AMERICA'S HELP. EXTENSIVE AVIATION PROGRAMME. Received May 23, 5.30 p.m. London, May 28. The Press Bureau, in summarising America's achievements since entering the war, states that including the Americans already serving with the FrancoBritish armies, there will shortly be a hundred thousand Americans in France. Arrangements have been made for the construction of 3500 war aeroplanes, and for training fiOOO aviators this year. RAIDERS REPULSED. GERMAN SUPPORT LINE REACHED. Lo'ndon, May 28. Sir Douglas Haig reports:—We repulsed raiders northward of Cherisy and southwards of Lens inflicting causalties and securing prisoners. We successfully raided northward of Armentieres and in the neighborhood of Wyssehaete we reached the German support lien. GERMANS PENETRATE FRENCH LINES. Auat. &, N.Z. Cable Assn. and Reuter. London, May 28. A French communique states:—ln the Champagne the enemy launched two attacks on Teton, but a iter succeeding in penetrating our lines they were completely ejected. 1 A third attack on Casque was broken. There is great artillery activity in the Champagne. WHAT THE GERMANS SAY THEY DID. Received May -29, 5.40 p.m. London" May 2S. A wireless German .official report states: We repulsed the English westward of Wytschaete. Stubborn fighting occurred between Cherissy and Bullecourt, where British oft-repeated attacks failed. We captured French trenches at Poehlberg and Keilbcrg. southward of Moronvillers. • Wo captured the post south-east of Nnetroy lust Friday. Wo brought down twelve aeroplanes and two balloons.
