KILLING A MAD MAORI.
ACCUSED ACQUITTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The trinl was'concluded nt the Suproo Court to-day of eight native? charged with manslaughter by killing Mitai Apirihama at Victoria Valley, on August 14, 1013. Accused were nil relatives of deceased, including his father. The case for the Crown was that death occurred in the whnre, Mitai lining held down till suffocated. Giving evidence for the defence, Or. Beattic, superintendent of the Avonditlo Hospital, said that from descriptions of deceased's actions and manner he believed he was insane. The defence was that the natives believed Mitai had become mad, and held him down to restrain from injuring the children in the wlmre. Mr. Ostler, counsel for several of accused, said it was oh advice of a woman now dead that accused had made the mistake of secretly burying Mitai's body After a retirement of twenty minutes the jury returned a verdict of not guilty.
