MAHOE. (From Our Own Correspondent). A farewell social and dance was tendered to. our school mistress, Miss Surman, on Friday evening, 25th instant, prior to her leaving to take up duties, in the Okaiuwa school. The weather was very wet, but a good crowd of people turned out to bid hor farewell. The evening passed away in dancing, singing and card-playing, songs being contributed by F. J. Cumbenvorth ("Father O'Flynn"), F. Maindonald' ("Just 'Plain Folk"), Bobby Whittington ("Wait Till the Clouds Roll By"), Mrs. Paulger ("Darby and Joan''), Elsie Kemp and Gladys Whittington ("The Long, Long Trail"), school children ("The Song of die Mariner"). Mr. Cumbenvorth then spok; of the good work Miss Surman had done among the scholars during tho five years she has been teacher here, and expressed great regret at her departure. The chairman (Mr. J. Whittington), in making a presentation to the guest of the evening, spoke of the way die had worked and the satisfactory reports'she had received from the inspectors. He then asked her to accept n dressing case and travelling rug as a token from the friends of the district. Miss Surnam briefly responded, and "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow" was sung.
