WANGANUI NOTES. (Ry "Moturoa.") Potentiality, on the strength of running close up in fourth place on the first day, was rushed in doubles for Saturday, and the public made the brown eon of Multifid a slightly better favorite than Lady General and Clia'kwana for the Winter Oats. Inali, who was ridden by Maurice McCarten, was i quiet tip, and was next best backed, while Miacara was quite neglected. Bivouac at- once rushed to the front, followed by Lady General, Lightning, and Interlude. Nearijig the bend, Inali, Interlude, and Potentiality passed Bivouac, and Chakwana came through fast. Potentiality was well clear at the distance, and ran in lan easy winner from Chakwana, who just lasted long enough to beat Veto, who finished very fast.
Johnny Walker was in great demand, both in the bar and on the tote, whpn the field went out in the rain for the Balgownie Hack Handicap. Henry Clay was next in favor, and Rio also found ■backers. Rio was prominent to Ihe turn, but in the run home Johnny WalKer came right away and won handsomely. Henry Clay was fourth. A good field of a dozen contested the Grandstand Steeples, and it was a great betting race. With the course a sea of slush and' the rain falling thickly, it looked madness to see Czaronus entrusted with over a thousand quidlets, while {Styrax and Nita each carried nearly nine hundred, and the total ran well over the four thousand mark. The favorites were quickly out of it, iStyrax turning over 1 at the first fence, while Czaronu9 "threw out" at the second of the double the first time past the stand. Nita and Grey Guard alternated in leading, with Jackman, Sandy Paul, and Marlon handy. Marton headed Nita and Grey Guard five furlongs from home, hut a bad jump sent him back again. Nita looked a winner at the bend, but Marton came again, and outpacing the opposition on the flat, won nicely from Nita, with Jackman, Grey Guard, Sandy Paul, St. Elmn, and Hereford next. Papaterc was pulled up. Marton's victory, though unexpected, was well received. He ran a good race on the opening day, and his win was overdue. Nita was hardly brilliant enough for a two and a half miles race, and will probably do better over bigger fences and longer courses. Jackman ran 'better than he has done for some time, and Sandy Paul (who was paying about enough to shout a round for the grandstand) also shaped I well. v
Colorado, the bracketed pair, Montana and Splendidus, and Kohinahina, carried fcho hulk of the money in the Rata Hack Hurdles. Deesidc stood at the', barrier, and Kohinahina took up the i-unuing from a bun,c)ied crowd. Combustion led along the back from Waioturc, Yarilla. Precious Mdtal, and Kohinahina, but the latter had only to be given his head to make the rest ook cheap. Waioture was easily second, and paid a great price. Colorado never flattered his backers, the weight stopped Montana. , The May Hurdles saw two fresh horses, Black Heart and Mahzoltov, in most demand, Bon Reve being next best backed. Otter and Mahzoltov made most of the running, the former falling three furlongs from home. Mahzoltov tired badly at the turn, leaving Bon Reve to win easily from Leonta, both paying wonderfully good "prices." Gang Awa' was almost an "even money" bet in the Empire Handicap, and lie pulled his backers through after an unexampled display of grit. Cherry Blosom led Kauri King, Prince Delaware, and Clang Awa' passing the stand,, but going out of the straight Gang Awa' had run into second place. At the six furlongs Kauri King dashed into the lead
and Gang Aya' was knocked right back. Gang Awa' made up his ground along the back, but was bumped again. Kauri King still held command as they came into the straight, but Gang Awa' drew level and raced neck and neck with thci Aucklander over the last hundred yards. The pair flashed past the post on terms, and while tho public were betting on which had' woh, the .iudge hoisted Gang Awa's number and the verdict was "half a head." There was a big strip of daylight to the third horse, Lady Middleton, and then came Detroit, Revocation, and Prince Delaware. Mr. "Billy" Duncan started both Endure and Polieho in the Farewell, and the bracket had a slight call over liupana and Lady Edith. P»!iehe set . the pace, but at the bend the field closed' up. I?ndure then shot out and won easily from White Ranger, who just beat Pohehe. Turangapito was fourth, just in front of Trickery, Hupana, and Maorilander. The principal winning owners at the meeting were: W. H. Windsor £450, F. S. Eastoji £145, J. Hurley £3oo, H. Meaglc £'2Bo. V. and E. Riddiford £'2153, Morris and Hammond £250. T. Higgins £2OO, and W. Cooper £2OO. Desert Gold has with 25 wins, one second, and one third, won r .£14,790. Intimation has been received by a Palmerston resident from a friend in Sydney that at a recent meeting, held at Randwick, tho record dividend of £Gufl 0s was paid -out on the 10s tote operating there. The Railway Department announces that there will not be any train service, to Ellerslie Racecourse on June 2r, 4, and ■G, for .tho Auckland races on those dates. No special trains will be run from the country, and no excursion tickets will be issued for the meeting.'
