The borough councillors have lost no timei in making every effort to get into full s.touch with, borough details. Although only elected a month ago, members have made a thorough inspection of* roads, buildings, etc., controlled by their officials. One special and ordinary meetings have.been held, and again next Monday they meet. The first special meeting was to consider the estimates brought down by the town* clerk, which were adopted.
Tho meeting for Monday is to consider the Working and inanaeement of the electric light business. This should create a fair debate, as the council is far from unanimous on the matter of present arrangements. All are actuated with the desire to make the concern a payable proposition, th,e difficulty lying in getting councillors to the one view that will secure the-foest results. Councillors have been considering the matter during the past week, and probably the Lighting Committee may have something to place before the meethg. Great preparations have been made in connection with the entertainment to be given in the Town Hall on Monday, June 4. The organisers, Mrs. C. McLaren and Mr. C. H. Pox. havo been fortunate in securing the best amateur talent in the district, so natrons may rely on attending one of the best concert programmes given here. The sale of tickets has been remarkably good, and the financial results aro assured. Tt may be added that the entertainment is in aid of the Red Cross and Wounded Soldiers. Dairy factories. are now working at a low ebb. bnttermaking every other day." The Midhirst. factory has had a long and very successful season. The faptory is very pleased with the patriotism of its workers. Usually nin» hands are employed, and seven of these hive gone ts the front. Another employee was anxious to go. but failed to pass the medical; test. This is asplondid i-cord. bilt the replacing nf men with raw'mafeml must,be a matter of concern to Mr. Clelland, the manager.
It is surprising what one can find if he or she only takes tlie trouble to investigate. Stratford possesses .a shop where the wife can obtain the best crockeryware and most pleasing 'banslc, bracelet, or watch she desires. Hubby can obtain his choice of smokes, pipes, and reading matter; the eldest girl and tho youngest boy can get what they most, bo it jewellery, thimble, or pocket-knife, and the place where this I wonderful variety is obtainable is C. E. James' Warehouse.*
