The. Wanganui meeting opened in perj feet weather. .The course was a. trifle holding, as a result of the recent rains. The attendance was large, the fields big, and the racing very interesting. The public picked them well, five first favorites winning. The Taranaki horses had indifferent luck, thirds being their share. Seventeen started in the Borough Handicap. Deeley got Lady General oi.t smartly and Avon easily. Veto began badly and I?fay Off shaped poorly.
Tlie Hack 1 Steeples was an interesting race. Union Jack led into the straight, but gave way to Czaronus, Kiwitea, Papatere, and Grey Guard. The Wanganui Steeples was a magnificent race, all fencing well'till Arlington lost his rider half a mile from home. Impostor "ed for two and a half miles, where. Styrax. : Braebum, Gluepot, and Nita came through; Styrax and Gluepot led over the last fence. The Auoklander had to be desperately ridden to score from Braehurn and N'ita. necks separating ; trio, with Nita finisWng fastest.
Montana jumpe" much better with the colors up than was anticipated, and won the Kaitoke Hurdles very easilv. Splendidus was bracketed with the winner. Lcorita was an odds on favorite for the Century Hurdles, but failed to see the journey out. Record and Golden March made the pace, but Sir Fisher took the lead half a mile fvoi? home, winning easily ft-om Bon Reve, who came from a long way back. The winner was capably handled by the New Plymouth horseman. Albert Ward.
Gang Awa' and Hendra monopolised tho betting for the Connolly Handicap. The former, with Prince Delaware, was quickly in a prominent position, and won easily from Hendra. Rewipoto got a bad passage, but was smothering everything at the finish. Johnny Walker .was a warm favorite in the Puma Handicap. Rylestone led to the home turn, but the favorite won comfortably.
