The death of Senior-Sergeant Rutledgo, of the Auckland police, is announced in a Press Association telegram. A London cable states that Major Valentine Fleming, M.P., has been killed in action. Mr. A. Bnllians, headmaster of the Waihi School, has been appointed temporary assistant at the Central School. A London cable reports that Mr. Leopold de Rothschild, third son of Baron Lionel de Rothschild, M.P., is seriously iii.

Appearing in the latest. hospital report are the following Taranaki cases of not seriously ill:—E. M. Gatton (Stratfqrd), E. C. Hone (Waverley), M. Lewis (Rahotu), G. T. W. Stanley (New Plymouth). Las Darcy, the Australian boxer, is in a 'critical condition states a Press Association cablegram from Memphis, U.S. A.). His physicians say that only his wonderful vitality will save him. Mr. W. P. [ On Thursday next Mr W. E. Fortescuo of Cullensville, Mahakipawa, will have attained his 100 th birthday. Mr Fortescue who is still hale and hearty, and in possession of 'his faculties, haa been 77 years in' New Zealand, having arrived at Port Nicholson (then called Britannia) on January 4, 1840. The deatli occurred in England last month, at the age of 85, of Lieut.-Geji. or.il Sir F. M. Colvile, Oxford and Bucks Light, Infantry. General Colvile served in the Taranaki war of 1864-65, and was wounded. He is an uncle of Rev. A. H. Colvile, late vicar of St. Mary's, and now of Auckland.

Advice has been received that Lieut.Colonel B, C. Freyburg, V.C., D.5.0., of the West Surrey Regiment, has been promoted for his services in, the field lo Brigadier-General commanding the 173 rd Infantry Brigade He is only 27 years of age, and formerly«resided in Wellington. He has served throughout the present war; having distinguished limself at Gallipolij and gained the V.C. for his splendid work in the battle of the Ancre.—Press Association.

A messapo from Greymouth ' records the sudden death of Mr. Frank Gardiner, transport clerk in 'district qffice of the New Zealand Railways. The late Mr. Gardiner had" a serious illness in the jumrner months, and had to. take extended leave, but it was thought on Ills return to duty ; that he had made a good recovery. He was for many tioned at New Plymouth, where his parents reside, and also at Palmerston North. He married Miss Ethel Abbott, of New /Plymouth, who is left with three young children to mourn her loss. News has been received by Mr. W. P. Kirkwood that .his brother, Major J. fj. Kij'kwood, who some time ago was awarded tiie D.5.0., has been promoted T ieut.-Colonel. Liout.-Oolonci Kirkwood. who was a resident of Stratford some vears ago, served in the Boer War, as iv private, earning Ms promotipn to Lieutenant. From Africa he went to England on the outbref.k of war, and was given a commission as captain in the 10th Glo t ucesters, proceeding to Franco with Kitchener's first 100,000 men. Ho was badly wounded at Loos by shrapnol, nnd also by, a rifle bullet, After ftVe months in the hospital he returned to the frpnt, where he has remained ever since, and obtained his majority previous to his latest promotion. Lieut.Colonel Kirkwood is now in command of the 10th Gloucestershire regiment. I
