At the opening of tho criminal sessions of the Supreme Court Mr. Justice Stringer said there were about seventeen charges, including a chargo against eight Maoris charged with the murder or manslaughter of a youth at Kaitaia some time ago. He was bound to say there' were no elements of murder in the case, tho necessary intention or malice aforethought being entirely absent. We supposed from the depositions the accusal believed the youth might exercise some evil influence over some children. Superstition 'had a good deal to do with the matter. He directed the grand jury tpreject the bill for murder and bring m a true bill for manslaughter. ' COAL MINES TROUBLE. Wellington, May 22.
Mr. Pryor, secretary of the Mine-own-ers' Association, says that if the mineowners could obtain a profit of la per ton on all coal mined they would he perfectly satisfied with the result. The mine-owners are prepared to submit their facts for investigation by the Board of Trade. There lias been no exploitation of the public; on the contrary, in many eases the increased cost of production has not been wholly passed on to the public.
