We have lad in New Zealand for some considerable time thousands and' thousands of pounds monthly (which in almost invariably drawn from capital account of the Dominion) distributed in the shape of pay J;o soldiers' dependents, said Mr. J. W. Gunson at Auckland last week. That, of course, was absolutely necessary, and most of it is passed on to the tradesmen, but I fear very little of that amount has been, saved to provide for the fuifure. I feel that it behoves tliOße responsible for the conduct of public affairs to issue warning regarding the need for economy and personal sacrifice. We have been basking under the benefits derived from the extraordinary high prices obtainable for our primary products. Now, however, shipping facilities are becoming lessened, and we are faced with the possibility of congestion at this end of our products at the ports. This will carry with it restriction of money distributed at this end, and there is even the danger of a lessened output of primary products if the stovcta cannot be cleared" 1 in due time. Such a thing means a restricted earning power on the part of the community. My own view is that we cannot complain regarding present conditions. We have been living in a fool's paradise for the greater part of two years, and spending, I fear, right up to the top of our income, which was much greater than that in pre-war times. Such policy can only be classed as sure madness on the part of the community,,"
