A special meeting of the Oity Claim* oil was held this afternoon to consider the city engineer's proposal .for dr&Hio cuts in tlio tram, picture, and other citv services, because coal is very short. A deputation from picture-theatre proprietors waited on the Council awing not to he cut out in the daytime. Th* 'pokesinnn claimed that the induitry was the fifth largest in the world, and said that (10 per cent, of the money taken in New Zealand was retained in the country. Tn Wellington alone about £100,0(10 was invested in the industry. The Mayor said the Minister of Munitions had assured him that afternoon that ,10,000 tons of coal monthly waa coming from Newcastle. Thil, the Mayor said, put a different CKnHpndon on the matter. Finally, • the Council: adjournal OOH* sideration of the report until the;MXt ordinary meeting.
