MINISTER STATES THE POSIT!'.. Bv Telegraph,—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. Tho Mayor received the following reply from Sir James Alien regarding the o'clock dosing of hotels': "The Government have no power by war regulations or otherwise to deal with 8 o'clock closing. and an amendment of the law would be neccsjnry to deal with the matter. The Government have 110 power to submit the matter to a referendum without the direction of Parliament. Parliament will be called together ftt tho usual time next month. It is considered necessary t'hat the Prime Minis, ter and Sir Joseph Ward should bo present in the Cabinet when the early closing question is tfileussed. * The matter will be brought before the .Prime Mint., ter and Sir Joseph War(l immediately on their return."
