NEW ZEALANDERS BEAT SYDNIiY UNIVERSITY.

Ail interesting game was phyctl at the University. Oval, Sydney, on Saturday, May r>, between the New Zealand Soldiers and the University team. r )he matoh was witnessed by his Excellency Beard, ftve-oighths; Sergeant Amodeo, half-back; Lieut. W. H. Grace, wingforward; W. H. b. Miller, Sergeant W. J. O'Meara, F. W. Spurdley, A. Frawley, J. 'L. Russell, P. E. Key and E. C. Prendergast, forwards. University.—J. Bogle, full-back; M. Shepherd, A. Cunningham, Garrett and Harvey three-quarters; M'Leod and Gall half-backs; Whittle, D. I.ondon, Eosscll, Gwynne, M'Guren, M'Mahon, Wilkinson and E. A. Woodward, forwards. The match was most keenly contested (says the Sunday Times). The big forwards of the Blacks were held by the 'Varsity vanguard, and with the ball at the toe the Collegians proved superior. Tackling was safe on both sides, and many times both backfislds sparkled in a way reminiscent ,of inter-Dominion 'Varsity games. The miniature halfback Gall showed up in all the play, nnd it was most .unfortunate for his side that forced to retire through injury before the finish. His vis-a-vis proved a tower of strength to the visitors. Amodeo scored the winning try in real New Zealand style, when it looked almost certain, that the locals would win. He cut round the scrum, and shot for the line, fooling two players beautifully. Grace, a tall player of inter-'Var-ssty fame,' was .always prominent, both as captain and flayer. Board and Mason, at five-eighths, and Russell in the forwards, also played ably. The University forwards, led by London, Rossell, and M'Guren, looked like wearing the Blacks down until an unexpected dash at the finish gave the latter a one-point win. Shepherd and Garrett were jthe pick of the backs, but Bogle often- n\adc some smart openings from the full-back position. For New Zealand. Amodeo scored two tries, one of which he converted. He also kicked a iipnnltv ffosil. London kicked a penalty for the 'Varsity, and Shepherd <™i'cd a try, which was converted by Harvey. Mr. R. C. Brown refereed.
